January 20, 2010 – Newsletter
We hope you enjoyed the mid-January break. The teachers and pastors spent yesterday in Walla Walla at a training session with pastor Shane Alexander, author of How to Kill Adventist Education: And How to Give it a Fighting Chance. We were inspired as we were reminded of the legacy and the importance of Adventist education.
I apologize for the late issue of this newsletter. I, too, was out of the office the past two days and the break has been rejuvenating.

Upcoming Event: A Taste of the Orient
Date/Time: January 24 – 5:00pm
Who it impacts: 9th grade and up... as well as all constituents
Overview: We are nearly out of tickets, as we have limited the number of participants, but there are still a few spots left. If you have not been contacted by a 9th or 10th grade student who is selling tickets to this event, and if you would like to attend, please contact the office to reserve your seats. Tickets are selling for $18 per adult or $10 per child (10 and under). Funds go to help students reach their goal so that they can participate in a mission trip outing to Rosario Tesopaco, Mexico, this March. The meal is being catered by Tony and Lynwyn Salango, from Calgary, Alberta (parents of TCJA alumus, Kamia Salango). The menu features a variety of traditional Asian dishes and a few of Tony's own concoctions such as vegetarian ginger beef (gluten) and butternut squash in coconut milk. Dinner entertainment will be provided by several local musicians.
Upcoming Event: Parent/Teacher Meetings
Date/Time: January 27 & 28 – both afternoons
Who it impacts: All Students
Overview: You should have already received and returned conference appointment letters. If your child did not bring a letter home, if you misplaced your letter, or if you forgot to send an appointment response and you would like to do so, please contact the office and Ms. Hibbs will put you on the master appointment calendar. Please note that school lets out at 12:30pm both of these days. Daycare is provided at the regular fee from the time school lets out until 6:00pm.
Upcoming Event: Calendar Change
Date/Time: February 22
Who it impacts: All Students
Overview: The calendar has us taking the day off on February 22 for teacher inservice (professional development). In the last month, our conference arranged the event we attended on January 19th, so we have switched these two days out. That means that we will be in school in February 22. Please change your calendar accordingly. If parents have already made arrangements to take their child(ren) out for the day and those arrangements cannot be changed, we need them to contact the office to have the day excused. Otherwise, we are expecting all students to be in class on this day. We try to set our calendar a year in advance, and when changes like this need to occur, we are grateful for the understanding and the flexibility of our school families.

It’s Not My Money…
At least four times this year, students have brought found money into the office. I am so pleased at the honesty that prompts a child to bring in cash that he or she finds on the school grounds. On three occasions, the money has been claimed, but most recently, money brought in just before Christmas has gone unclaimed. I suppose this is an opportunity to see how well students read the newsletter. I am choosing, therefore, to inform the student who brought in found money the month before Christmas break, that the money is yours if you come in to claim it. Thank-you all for your honesty.
Make Sure All Back Work Is In...
This is the last week to get in work from the second quarter. Make sure that all of your work is caught up. High School students especially need to note that this Friday the door will close on all first semester subjects.
Ski Club – One Door Closes, but Another Door Opens...
Due to a lack of interest, the ski club hasn’t really gotten off the ground this year. Several students had expressed an interest initially, and the plan made it past the staff, however, only one student showed up at the formation meeting, so we have put this club on hold for this school year. Perhaps we could look to planning for next year. Meanwhile, we do have an invitation for students who might like to take part in the Ski the Summit weekend at Bozeman, Montana (Mt Ellis Academy), February 21-24. Deadline to apply for this event is February 1. Contact Mr. Oucharek for more information.

Grade 1/2 Class feeds hungry children through ADRA
The first and second graders decided (under their teacher's leadership) t
hat they would like to raise $200 for ADRA to help feed hungry children this Christmas rather than exchange gifts among each other. Part of the excitement in the project came via an unnamed matching donor, who had committed to put in $6 for each dollar raised by the children (making the perfect 7). With their $200, they planned to end up with a total of $1,400 - a relatively large sum to our staff as well as to them.
They started by hosting a school-wide bakesale that netted almost $175 for their campaign which meant that they only had to bring a dollar each on their party day to reach their goal. Instead, they expanded their goal. They advertised their campaign and finished by bringing in their own offerings as well as by collecting some offerings from church members and parents. When all was said and done, the students had raised $668.77. Adding the matching funds, then, our students and their supporters grew $4,681.39 to feed hungry children through ADRA. Thank-you to all those who supported this vision, from parents (who did the baking) to church members (who opened wallets) to students (who purchased cakes and cookies, and who gave up exchanging presents for each other to do this instead).
Make Sure All Work Is In
