Time Marches On...

vol 2 – Issue 20 March 1, 2012

JH-HS Study Hall Changes

TCJA is still providing a no-charge, after-school study hall on regular school days, Monday –Thursday, until 5:10pm. There is a charge of $1 per 5 minutes for students staying beyond that time, however, as teachers have other commitments to get to, as well. Students have responded well to the new format which includes a number of new guidelines:

· Students log in and log out.

· Cell phones and personal music devices are to be checked in at the door.

· Students are expected to be completing homework first. When all caught up with school work, they may read, puzzle, or use their personal computers.

· Students are expected to respect the study needs of others.

K and Pre-K Parent Program

March 6, at 6:30 pm, TCJA will be hosting a dinner at the Small World Learning Center for parents. Mr. Oucharek, Mrs. Canaday, and Mrs. Villarreal will be presenting a program outlining plans for next school year as we deal with the potential influx of 1st grade students. Parents (and children) are invited out to eat together and to talk about how we envision serving the needs of our growing school community.

Box Tops Report

It might not seem like much, but clipping box tops has amounted to a chunk of change for the Home and School Association to use. The box tops that you brought in, netted us $160. We will send in another raft of box tops at the end of May, so keep bringing them in… It isn’t often you can get rewarded for something you would normally throw away.

7-10 Class Scramble

This Saturday evening from 6:30 to 9:00 the ASB will be hosting a class scramble. There are prizes for many things, including the class that wears the most of their color for the evening (7=green, 8=purple, 9=black, 10=hot pink). While siblings and parents are welcome to come out, watch, and cheer, the games are restricted to TCJA 7th through 10th graders. It will be as good a time as the support it receives.

Riddle… wanna hat?

Drew was the first to bring in last week’s answer. This week, here’s the question…

Those people who make this stuff want nothing to do with it. Nobody wants this stuff, but some people will get it anyway – of course, they have no idea at the time that they have it. When anyone realizes they have this stuff, they want no part of it.

What is this stuff?

Bullying Stops Here...

vol 2 – Issue 19 February 23, 2012

Finding Kind

This afternoon our bus will be taking a load of young ladies over to WWVA for a screening of the movie, Finding Kind. A campaign that is currently running for girls across the nation, this movie deals with a topic that has been increasing over the last several years – girl violence and bullying. Girls who are in 5th grade and up have been invited to attend. Today’s group will be leaving the school around 4:45. Ms. Short will be driving the bus.

Basketball Postponed

Our home games have been put on hold (they will be rescheduled) until we get our replacement hoop and backboard up. Last Thursday, at the start of the varsity practice, our backboard was shattered in a freak accident. All away games will go on as scheduled. Practice will continue on one side of the gym.

Golf Tournament Fundraiser

The second annual TCJA Spring Golf Tournament Fundraiser is set for April 15. This tournament is to raise funds for class trips. It is held at Golfland in Pasco, and the price of admission includes the round of golf, a barbecue afterwards, the possibility of winning some prizes and a lot of fun. The team price is $70 ($35 per person). All players register for the tournament in teams. Space is limited, so watch for more information and sign up as soon as you are certain that you want to participate.

Box Tops for Education

Home and School will be sending in a batch of collected Box tops for Ed early next week so please turn in what you have. That way, they will have their first box top check by the end of April. Even if you don’t make this deadline, continue to bring in Box Tops as they will also have a year-end submission.

After School Soccer for Grades 1-4

Starting in April (the 3rd) we will be offering an afterschool soccer program for students in grades 1 through 4. Our Home and School leader, Bobbie-Jo Engeberg will be heading up this program. There will be a minimal fee for participating, but the program is open to all children grades 1 through 4 who might be interested.

Basketball Games Begin

vol 2 – Issue 19 February 17, 2012

Early Registration Approaches

There is only a month and a half before the Early Registration deadline is upon us. Registering early for the coming year does several things. First, and most importantly, it allows you to access an incredible discount on the normal registration rates. Second, it allows you to lock in the space for your child. Third, it allows us to plan textbook acquisition so that we can purchase in a timeframe that nets us the best discounts on our orders.

Registering by Friday, April 13 will see you paying an entrance fee of $220 per child while registering at the end of August will cost you $380.

Dress Code...reminder

Some of us have slacked off a little when it comes to dressing appropriately for school. It is not that we have been immodest, but rather, that we have become a bit sloppy… and it isn’t all of us, and it isn’t all of the time. Nonetheless, we would like to present a better picture for those who come through our school. We also believe that we perform better when we are dressed well.

Please remember that collared shirts are mandatory, even when wearing sweatshirts. Avoid some of the ragged fashions (torn jeans, etc.) and remember that short pants are not in season until April, other than for PE. Students (especially those in high school) who are not dressed appropriately may be required to call home for a change of clothing before being allowed to participate in classes.

Basketball Teams …

The 6-8 (with some 5’s) boys basketball team has 6 games currently scheduled. The 8-10 boys have 2 games and a tournament. Watch the weekly Dirt for updates and information on more games.

The 6-8 girls basketball has been practicing. We have a dedicated coach, but the numbers of interested girls has dropped. Girls in 9/10 who would like to learn the game better are welcome to come out and practice during thisMonday/Wednesday time slot. This will give our girls the opportunity to learn the game better so as to be able to play in the future, though we will not schedule any games if we do not have enough girls in any one program to meet the numbers required for a game.

Mexican Food (2) …

Last week the Kennewick Spanish Church served our hot lunch as a fundraiser for their student aid funds. More than 50 people purchased lunch to help this fund. This Monday, the Pasco Spanish lunch will be running the fundraiser for the same cause. Once again, if you are a fan of home-cooked Mexican food, you might not want to miss out on this lunch.

Another Lunch Fundraiser

Bradley and Abe are serving a haystack lunch on Thursday as a fundraiser for their spring mission trip. They will be participating in a Share Him ministry in the Dominican Republic, and need to raise a chunk of cash, quickly. They thank-you in advance for your support.

New Monday Lunch Plan

vol 2 – Issue 17 February 2, 2012

Mexican Food …

Kennewick Spanish Church is planning to serve hot lunch this Monday as a means of helping raise worthy student funds. They are hoping that many students (and even parents) might take advantage of the opportunity to eat some authentic Mexican food and support their students at the same time. Enchiladas, rice and beans are on the menu for the day, and they’re also accepting orders for take home trays of any of the above. If you are a fan of Mexican food, you will not want to miss out on this lunch.

Calendar Change … TCJA at Riverview Church

Please note that the March 3 program we had planned to do at Riverview Church has been changed to March 31. Mark your calendars accordingly. With the exception of the Kennewick church service which saw many of our students bound in by snow, we have had super attendance and participation at these functions. It would be really neat if we had 100% participation this time.

Home And School Tidbits...

The Home & School Association is collecting Box Tops for Education. Watch for boxtop coupons on a variety of commonly purchased grocery and household items such as cereals, granola bars, etc. The little coupons are to be cut out of the packaging and brought to the school (or your church) drop box collection sites. Each boxtop collected is worth a minimum of 10 cents for our school.

Also, the H&S would like to announce that the Free Polo rack is still operating. Many people have collected polos, and many have taken polos – all good. While we are very happy that so many families have taken advantage of this program, please note that we do have very few shirts at the moment. Please keep the rack in mind when cleaning out closets. Thanks Home and School.

Tri-City Youth Ski Day …

TCJA and Richland AY have teamed up to bring our church and school community a great rate for skiing and snowboarding at White Pass. TCJA qualifies for the education discount and RAY is providing a youth stipend so the rates are great. Adults or families who would like to participate can also qualify for the group rate, however they will need to sign up and they will need to provide their own transportation. Registration forms are in the office.

Riddle Me This…

Here goes... I am looking to give a hat away to the first person (Friday) who can tell me the answer to this week’s riddle. It is a Language Arts riddle:

If you look in the present tense and you look in the past tense you will easily note something that children love. What is it?

Thank-you Mrs. Atkins for submitting this (modified) riddle.

Snow Days...

vol 2 – Issue 16 January 23, 2012

A Snow Day does not Necessarily Mean a Free Day…

High School exams wrapped up this afternoon and today has been unofficially the last day of the second quarter (and the first semester). But the snow days messed up more than just our exam schedule. The snow days made it necessary for us to extend the year-end calendar through June 8. We wanted to get early notice to parents as some make plans for the day that school gets out, so please make that adjustment to your calendars. We will follow this letter with more information in the coming months.

School to let out at 1:00 Tomorrow (January 24)

Remember that tomorrow is only a half day. Teachers will be taking the afternoon for a professional inservice, evaluating and making sense of the ITBS results. These results will then be passed on to the parents in the ensuing weeks. We regret that this comes on the heels of our most recent closing for a day and a half (last Thursday and Friday); however, we felt it best to go ahead as scheduled since this needs to be done each year about this time.

2nd Quarter Parent/Teacher Meetings

Wednesday, January 25, is slated for parent/teacher meetings for grades K through 4. School will let out at 1:00 for those students so that parents and teachers can meet and discuss any felt concerns at this midway point in the year. Grades 5 through 10 classes will go on as regularly scheduled, and dismiss as usual at 3:15pm.

Parents of students in K through 4 who wish to meet with the teacher may call the teacher directly and schedule a meeting. In some cases, it may be the teacher who desires the audience with the parents. In that case, we will contact you to set up the same.

Zero-Hour Class for 9/10 Students… One Day Only

Having lost four Mondays in a row, The 9/10 class is in a desperate position to complete some activities before the second quarter report. This class will meet from 7:40 until 9:12 tomorrow, January 24. Though attendance will not be taken until 8:30, students only have this one day to make up all of the class requirements; it is in their best interest to be early.

Thank-you to the Snow Removal Crews

Thanks Dean Brunken, Justin Wenham, Brad Birney, Mr. and Mrs. Au, Sun-Yu, and any others who contributed to drying out our sidewalks. U R special.

January

24 Test Analysis Day – 1:00 dismissal

25 Parent/Teacher Conferences for Grs K-4 – 1:00 dismissal for those grades only

Mr. O’s Pick…

This week’s muffin goes to Mrs. Shupe. When our substitute teacher plans fell through, she adjusted her schedule so as to be able to fill that hole seamlessly for us these last three days, while Mr. Brunkhorst has been away. So Tuesday, the 17th, swing by the office for your freebie muffin, Mrs. Shupe.

Hot Lunch This Coming Week…

Since the Snow Day has messed with our Newsletter schedule, below is the menu for tomorrow through February 3 (as always, veggies, deserts, etc. are a la carte):

Wednesday, 25th… tater tot casserole, chik nuggets

Thursday, 26th … pasta with sauces and garlic bread

Tuesday, 31st … haystacks

Wednesday, Feb 1st … pizza

Thursday, 2nd … soup with fixin’s
